The industry-accepted lifetime for fluorescents occurs when 50% of lamps within a population have failed. The figure to the right illustrates this by showing the lamp failure curve achieving a generous 40,000 hour average rated lifetime. This may sound practical, but rating a roomful of fixtures in this way actually trivializes the most important factors to their effectiveness— the appearance and total light level in the room.
This is because the lifetime is based on a mean failure rate. While, on average, this population of lamps could last 40,000 hours, the reality is that half of those lamps will fail randomly before their rated life is reached, often beginning at 50% of rated life. This will continually reduce the light level over time throughout the room and create a spotty, ineffective light distribution and an unattractive ceiling.
To help solve this problem, many companies spend large amounts of maintenance time and costs spot relamping and/or group relamp at 60-70% of their rated life. This means the average life of a fluorescent lamp in this population is, in reality, closer to 25,000 hours— that's half the rated lifetime of a CR Series fixture!
While fluorescents are defined by lamp failure, the lighting industry has standardized LED lifetime rating by defining it as the time at which delivered lumens depreciate to 70% of initial lumens (as illustrated in the figure by the L70 white curve). Rating lifetime in this way ensures LED fixtures are measured against the most important factor to their effectiveness— the total light level in the room.
The CR Series' advanced thermal design is engineered to maximize cooling effectiveness, which optimizes LED performance to last a minimum of 50,000 hours (nearly 13 years in a typical commercial application). This greatly reduces the need for relamping and maintenance, saving you both time and money.
